SONG FOR HAMISH
This song is dedicated to the memory of the late Scottish singer Hamish Imlach who was a friend of mine. The last time I met Hamish we sang and drank together long into the night and he asked me to write a song for him. This is not the song I intended to write, but instead is a tribute to a wonderful man whom it was my pleasure to have known. The song features on my CD "Words".
CHORUS
He was a big man, with a great big heart
A laugh that could take a room apart
And round the world where music's played
They all knew Hamish weIl
And when we die, if we go somewhere
If there's really castles in the air
You can bet your life, that he'll be there
And a tale he'll have to tell.
Hamish was a friend of mine, I hadn't seen him for sometime
The last time that we met, we sang and drank the whole night through
He asked me to write him a song, I'm sorry that it took so long
The words just seemed to come out wrong
But big man this songs for you.
CHORUS
He sang of Scotland with great pride, of Glasgow and the river Clyde
The shipyards and the times he knew, he was singing till the end
And just to have the final say, he bid farewell at hogmannay
And left behind so many
Who were proud to call him friend.
CHORUS
He wasn't what you'd call a star, but people came from near and far
To join him in a final jar, that lonesome hogmannay
Another flower of Scotland gone, his songs and stories will live on
In generations left to come
When they hear his music played.
CHORUS
